About Composition

Jazz pianist, Craig Taborn talks briefly on the important role of time in the context of composition.

Really getting used to hearing time. That’s the biggest thing. One of the big problems with composition is really sort of organizing time. And having a sense of the larger concept of a span of time. Like if you were going to write a piece that’s suppose to go for 20 minutes. It can be difficult to maintain a sense of scale and balance within that amount of time. It’s easy to write a little phrase and then say let’s improvise on that. But if you’re really talking about composition, you have to have the big picture in mind.
